Moving Day Do's and Don'ts

As the spring real estate market kicks into high gear, many families are gearing up for the exciting (and sometimes stressful) process of moving. Whether you're relocating to a new neighborhood in Madison or making a big move across the country, proper planning and preparation can make all the difference. To help you navigate this important day with ease, we've compiled a list of essential do's and don'ts:

Do's:

Plan Ahead: Create a detailed moving timeline that includes packing deadlines, utility transfers, and final walk-throughs. This will help you stay organized and reduce last-minute stress.

Declutter Before Packing: Take the time to go through your belongings and donate or sell items you no longer need. This will not only lighten your load but also make unpacking easier at your new home.

Label Your Boxes/Color Code: Clearly label each box with its contents or assign a certain color sticker to certain rooms or categories. This will make unpacking much smoother and help make sure boxes end up in the correct rooms.

Pack Essentials Separately: Pack a separate box or bag with essentials you'll need for the first few days in your new home, such as toiletries, medications, and a few changes of clothes.

Secure Valuables: Keep important documents, jewelry, and other valuables with you during the move to ensure they arrive safely.

Hire a Mover (at least for the big things): Don’t waste the stress, exhaustion and potential injury on trying to move those big or awkward items on your own. Let the professionals take care of it. If you’re in the Madison area, we recommend Big Dog Movers!

Don'ts:

Waste space: Utilize space that will be taken up anyways! For example, keep clothing in your dresser drawers, place plastic wrap around each one to protect it, and you are done. Dresser drawers, backpacks/duffel bags, and baskets/bins will take up space no matter what, so you might as well have them full.

Forget to Forward Your Mail: Update your address with the post office at least a week before your move to ensure your mail is forwarded to your new address.

Overload Boxes: Avoid packing boxes too heavy, as this can make them difficult to lift and increase the risk of items breaking.

Leave Cleaning for the Last Minute: Plan to clean your old home thoroughly before moving out. This will leave a good impression on the new owners and help you get your security deposit back if you're renting.

Forget to Celebrate: Moving day can be hectic, but don't forget to take a moment to celebrate this exciting new chapter in your life!

By following these do's and don'ts, you can help ensure a smooth and successful moving day. Remember, our team is here to support you every step of the way. If you have any questions or need assistance, don't hesitate to reach out. Happy moving!
