Last-Minute Summer Getaways
Kid-Friendly Trips Near Madison Before School Starts
Summer went by way too fast—and suddenly the school calendar is staring us down. If you’re looking for one last adventure before backpacks, schedules and early mornings take over, you don’t have to travel far from Madison.
Here are a few easy family getaways that can be done as a day trip or a quick overnight.
Go Camping Close to Home
Sometimes the best getaway is simply sleeping under the stars. You don’t have to drive hours north to enjoy a camping weekend.
Blue Mound State Park is about 25 miles west of Madison and makes an easy choice for families who want hiking, scenic views and a campground without a long drive. The park also has a summer swimming pool and splash pad, which can be a big hit with kids.
Closer to town, Lake Farm County Park offers camping on Madison’s south side, making it possible to enjoy a campground experience while still being close to everything Madison has to offer.
Another option is Lake Kegonsa State Park near Stoughton, where families can combine camping with swimming, hiking, boating and fishing.
For families who want more of a traditional campground experience, Token Creek Campground in DeForest or Whistle Stop Campground in Marshall are also worth checking out.
Tip: For a last-minute August trip, check campground availability for weekdays as well as weekends. A Tuesday–Thursday escape can be just what everyone needs before school begins.
Wisconsin Dells
About an hour from Madison, the Wisconsin Dells is an easy choice when the kids want one more big summer adventure. Spend the day at a waterpark, explore the area or make it an overnight trip.
If you want to mix things up, add a stop at Devil’s Lake State Park for hiking, swimming and beautiful scenery. The Dells and Baraboo area can easily turn into a full weekend without requiring a long road trip.
Devil’s Lake & Baraboo
For families who would rather spend their last summer days outdoors, head north to Baraboo. Devil’s Lake offers hiking, swimming, boating and plenty of places for a picnic.
There are also family-friendly nature programs happening at the park throughout August, making it a fun way to sneak a little learning into the last days of summer.
Lake Geneva
If you have a little more time, Lake Geneva makes a fun weekend getaway. Spend the day by the water, take a boat ride, walk around town and enjoy one last summer evening together.
It’s far enough away to feel like a vacation but still manageable for a quick weekend escape.
Keep It Local
And remember, you don't always need an overnight stay to make a summer memory. Spend a day exploring Madison's parks, beaches and outdoor attractions.
Pack a picnic, visit the zoo, rent bikes or find a new trail to explore. Sometimes a simple day together is the perfect way to wrap up summer.
One Last Adventure
Before the school-year routine begins, pick a day, pack the car and go. Whether it’s a night around a campfire, a day at the lake or a quick road trip, you don’t need a week-long vacation to make one more great summer memory.
Here’s to squeezing every last bit of fun out of August!
