Walking in a Winter Wonderland


As us Wisconsinites are still waiting for that first heavy snowfall to occur, we can't help but enjoy the warm(ish) weather that Mother Nature has gifted upon us. That could change in a blink of an eye, though, as us natives of this great state know very well.

If you're the nature connoisseur type who enjoys the wintry bliss that Wisco has to offer, these events may just be the fun you're seeking. With fun for all, mark your calendars and roundup the fam for these candlelit hikes and nature walks offered throughout the surrounding Madison area.

Wednesday, Dec. 20

UW Arboretum, Visitor Center, Madison

Explore the prairies, wetlands, and wooded areas during this sunset walk on the shortest day of the year. Meet at the Visitor Center at 4 p.m. The walk goes until 5:30 p.m.

Bird Watch and Nature Outing

Saturday, December 23

Aldo Leopold Nature Center, Madison

Take a stroll through the Edna Taylor Conservation Park from 10-11:30 a.m. Get your wildlife fix with beautiful views and fresh Wisconsin air. The journey begins at the Aldo Leopold Nature Center.

Bird Watch and Nature Outing

Lake Shore Nature Preserve, Madison

Spend Christmas Eve with family and friends in the great outdoors. This nature walk provides an abundance of wildlife and opportunities to spot all your favorite bird breeds. Enjoy a campfire afterwards with free marshmallows and hot cocoa. The walk will go from 1:30-3 p.m.

New Years Eve Night Walk

UW Arboretum, Madison

Ring in the New Year with a gorgeous nature walk. Enjoy a cup of hot chocolate as you walk through the wetlands, prairies, and wooded areas. Meet at the Visitor Center at 6:30 p.m. The walk goes until 8:30 p.m.

Blue Mound Candlelight Ski, Hike, and Snowshoe

Blue Mound State Park, Blue Mounds

Spend a night with family and friends at Blue Mound State Park. Lots of activities are scheduled, including candlelight events, cross country skiing, hiking, outdoor activities, and snowshoeing. The event goes from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Mirror Lake Candlelight Ski, Hike, and Snowshoe

Saturday, January 6

Mirror Lake State Park, Baraboo

Enjoy a night out at the beautiful Mirror Lake State Park. The annual winter skiing, hiking, and snowshoeing event will offer many activities, including candlelight walks, bonfires, hot chocolate, and treats. The event runs from 6-8 p.m.

Cherokee Marsh Candlelight Walk

Saturday, January 27

Cherokee Marsh, Madison

Visitors will be able to tour the marsh on three candlelit trails and can arrive at anytime and go at their own pace. Free beverages will be provided as well as a bonfire to warm up after the walk. The event is open from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
